A 48-year-old Indian-origin woman has been arrested for allegedly slashing the throat of her 11-year-old son and killing him after taking a three-day break to Disneyland. The suspect, Saritha Ramaraju, has been accused of a single felony charge of murder and one felony personal use of a weapon enhancement with a knife, a news wire The office of the district attorney in Orange County, California, released a statement stating that Ramaraju faces 26 years to life imprisonment if convicted of all charges.
Ramaraju was divorced from her husband and relocated out of California in 2018. She was with her son for a visit to Santa Ana when the tragic incident happened. For a visit to Santa Ana, she bought three-day Disneyland passes to Disneyland for both herself and her son. From there, Ramaraju had to move out of the motel on March 19 and send her son to the father. Rather, she called 911 on that day at approximately 9:12 am (local time) and told them that she had murdered her son and had taken some pills to end her life too.
The Santa Ana police soon reached the location and discovered the dead body of the 11-year-old boy lying on the bed in a room full of Disney memorabilia. It was stated by the DA that it had seemed as though the boy had been dead for a number of hours prior to when Ramaraju reported the cops. The murder weapon, a large kitchen knife, was located in the very same motel room. The accused purchased the knife the day before. As she had ingested some unknown substance following the murder of her son, she was hospitalized.
On Thursday, Ramaraju was discharged from the hospital and taken into custody on suspicion of her role in the boy's death.Orange county DA Todd Spitzer stated, "The life of a child should not be held in the balance between two parents whose anger for each other is greater than their love for their child." "Anger makes you forget who you love and what you are responsible for doing. Child's most safe place is his\ her parent's arm.Instead of hugging her arms around their son with love, she cut his throat and in the cruel twist of fate took him away from the very world she welcomed him into," he added.
Interestingly, Ramaraju was also involved in a custody fight with her husband Prakash Raju for her son last year. The battle was the consequence of Ramaraju's complaints that he was making school and medical decisions unilaterally without seeking her opinion. She further claimed that her former husband was also a substance abuser. After the divorce of the couple in 2018, Raju was awarded the custody of his son while Saritha was allowed visitation rights, court documents stated.
Ramaraju lived in Virginia's Fairfax and wanted her 11-year-old son to reside with her. She had alleged a "history of substance abuse issues" against Ramaraju, further stating that he "gets very aggressive under the influence of alcohol, drugs and smoke". She blamed Prakash Raju for having "severe control issues", averring their son is "very scared to speak to mother since he would get into trouble with dad". Raju, meanwhile, blamed his ex-wife for "grossly quoting totally false and untrue abuse and substance abuse problems".
